What is the future of online dating for Generation Z?
Since the pandemic, dating has drastically changed from human interactions to constant texts and video calls. Covid-19 has taught many young people the realities of basic hygiene as well as the dating scene within the technology age.
Spoken about in our first podcast episode “Eww online dating in a pandemic” with Lorraine Brobby. We touch on our personal experiences of online dating using apps like Hinge, Bumble and Tinder. Hinge has been the most used dating app currently as Tinder has slowly died out within Generation Z. Dating apps have installed video call features due to the pandemic. Users can now facetime within the app before taking personal details to move to the next stage.
However, the next innovative idea for online dating has just surfaced on the internet with a new app called “Lolly” by Gen Z entrepreneurs Marc Baghadjian and Sacha Schermerhorn. The concept is a path between Tiktok and Tinder where users can upload short videos onto their profiles in a vertical scroll through format. Allowing users to see potential matches of humour and creativity through short videos.
As apps like Tiktok have taken over the internet and the attention spans of many young people have shortened. It seems like video will be the future of dating as users can create more content, show more of a personal aspect within themselves instead of a still image. Genz-ers want more in every interaction, engagement and experience they enter, whether it is dating or just networking. The standards of online dating have progressively changed from the old Tinder days.
